One time when I was little I was in Mt. Vernon Ohio with my Dad. We were doing what my dad does best, bookstores. We went into a Christian bookstore on Main St. and my Dad was browsing all the latest titles and making small talk with the salesman. I followed my Dad like a shadow and was a 3 out 5 on the bored out of my mind scale, 1 being not bored at all and 5 being I might wet my pants right here because the embarrassment from that would be more exciting then doing what I am doing right now. Looking back I don’t remember much about it other then one thing; I thought the salesman thought he was awesome. I didn’t think that was a very good trait for a guy that worked in a Christian bookstore.
My dad was winding down this wonderful shopping experience when he found a book he had just reviewed for a Christian book review. He snatched it up and showed it to the salesman.
“I just reviewed this book for a Christian book review.” he exclaimed proudly.
“That’s neat,” the salesman replied, as awesomely as he could.
“Have you read it?” my dad said.
The salesman slowly looked up from what he was doing. “No I haven’t.” Followed by a long awkward silence. “Actually Ken I don’t read anything other then the Bible to be honest with you.”
More silence, “Oh well, that’s great,” my Dad chirped, as he sat the book back on the dusty table and said farewell to our pseudo-pious friend. We made our way out of the musty fluorescent lit shop and out underneath the white and green striped awning of the bookstore. I looked up at my Dad wondering what he thought about the display of transparency by the devout man of God inside.
“Do you think he is lying Dad?”
“I like to believe the best son. He sure was pseudo-pious about it though.”
I looked down the street towards the town square and thought “man that guy was more like Jesus then Jesus”.

A few years ago I was in Minneapolis at a Pastors Conference and I saw Josh Harris walk into the same session I was in. I was pumped and excited to talk to him because I have read his books and in my mind he was a Christian Celebrity. I made my way across the room to where he was so I could shake his hand and tell him how much I appreciated his work. I stepped up and held out my hand and said hello. Josh lit up, he was excited to talk to me. He didnt say one word about himself or his books. He asked me what I did for a living. He asked me where I was from. He asked me what my future goals were. He took a sincere interest in me and I walked away feeling like a celebrity.
I am currently reading his book “Dug Down Deep” and you should too. If you ever get the chance to meet Josh do it. You will walk away feeling like a rock star.

I wonder why the story of Hophni and Phineas the sons of Eli didnt make it into the Childrens Bible that I am reading?
Hophni and Phineas had no respect for the house of God and used their position as sons of a Priest to their own advantage. They used the temple like it was their private steakhouse and slept with women they ought not have slept with. Tisk tisk tisk. The Lord was not intrigued. Read the story for yourself… 1 Samuel 2:12-36

I live in Door County Wisconsin. I have heard it described as the Cape Cod of the mid-west. I wouldn’t know though because I have never been there. I can tell you that Door County is beautiful though. I have spent a lot of time here. I have explored the back roads of the county. I have spent time on the different beaches. I have enjoyed the little coffee shops that sit along the waters of Green Bay and Lake Michigan. I am just now enjoying the colors, the smells, and the tastes, of a Door County fall. It’s beautiful here, almost perfect. But everything is not perfect.
Behind the doors of the nautical styled homes that I drive past, and on every beach that I sit and enjoy the creation of God, and every coffee shop where I sit secluded by myself and read, are people. People that are not perfect. People who fight with their families, people who have addictions, people who have been hurt, people who need God. Everything is not perfect, so while I am enjoying a near perfect county I will make sure and talk to the people that I brush up against on a daily basis. Make me a deal? Do the same.
